Did you recently get metal braces in Canfield? Even though they’re the most tried-and-true orthodontic treatment, there are still several misconceptions about them. You’ll likely come across them while browsing the internet, leaving you with more questions than answers. Well, we’re here to set the record straight once and for all. Read along as we debunk six common myths about metal braces.

Metal Braces Will Rust

When metal comes into contact with water, it usually leads to rust. However, that’s not the case at all with metal braces. The type of metal used for this treatment is titanium alloy, which will not rust. It doesn’t matter if you’re wearing your braces for six months or three years – you can enjoy a rust-free smile throughout your entire treatment!

They Permanently Straighten Teeth

Orthodontic treatment is the most effective way to achieve a straighter smile. After your metal braces are removed, you’ll need to preserve your hard-earned results with a retainer. Failing to wear it as instructed by your orthodontist will cause your teeth to shift back to their original pretreatment position.

Your Braces Will Always Hurt

False! While your metal braces may feel uncomfortable at times, they shouldn’t hurt. After some time, you’ll get used to having them in your mouth and will hardly notice them.

They Can Be Given by a Dentist

You should only get metal braces from a trained orthodontist. Although both dentists and orthodontists complete the same training, orthodontists go the extra mile to specialize in treatments like braces. They’re experts in knowing how to get your teeth as straight as possible.

You Don’t Have to Wear Your Rubber Bands

At times, you may be tempted to ignore your orthodontist’s instructions and only wear your rubber bands when you feel like it. However, doing so can significantly delay your treatment. That’s why you should always follow your orthodontist’s instructions to a T!

Your Wire Will Need to Be Changed at Every Appointment

Patients with metal braces will have regular checkups with their orthodontist to ensure everything is going according to plan. Changes will only be made if it’s needed to help your treatment move along smoothly. Depending on your case, your orthodontist may decide to leave the wire in your braces for another few weeks.

Now that we’ve set the record straight, you can be excited to start working towards your new healthy smile!
