Caring for Your Smile at Home

If you do experience a dental emergency, there are some steps you can take to relieve discomfort at home before visiting our office. Don’t hesitate to contact Dr. Mikolich if you have questions or need emergency care. We’re here to help whenever patients need us. The following are some basic at-home steps patients can take during common orthodontic emergencies:

Loose appliance- Place wax on the part of the appliance that is causing irritation and call the office as soon as possible so that it can be resolved.

Loose Bracket- If the bracket is still attached to the wire, leave in place and place wax as needed to alleviate discomfort.  If the bracket or band can be removed easily, place in an envelope and bring it to the next appointment.

Loose wire-Use clean needle-nosed pliers or tweezers to put the wire back in place. If unable to put the wire in a comfortable position, cover the end of the wire with dental wax to protect the mouth until they visit our team.

Soft Tissue Irritation or Inflammation

Some patients may experience irritation or inflammation in the lips, cheeks, gums, and other soft tissue typically caused by rubbing against their oral appliance. Pain relievers can be used to relieve discomfort. If the soft tissue irritation persists or worsens please give us a call.
