Braces are one of the most (if not the most) sought-after dental treatments. After all, they’ve helped millions of patients over the last few decades alone address spaced-out teeth, bite issues, and more. But how much do you really know about this teeth-straightening service? Put your knowledge to the test by reading the below fun facts about braces!

Fact #1. Orthodontic Problems Date Back to 50,000 B.C.

Orthodontic issues are by no means limited to the 21st century. In fact, according to the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, remains of Neanderthals showed teeth irregularities – that was back in 50,000 BC! It wasn’t until much later (1728) that the first braces were designed.

Fact #2. We Have NASA to Thank for Modern Braces

At first glance, it might not seem like the wires that hold your braces in place are anything to write home about. However, the nickel titanium is durable, safe, and heat resistant – we have NASA to thank for that technology. In fact, they created the state-of-the-art material used to make clear braces as well!

Fact #3. Braces Do More Than Straighten Teeth

While braces can seamlessly address orthodontic issues, like crooked and spaced-out teeth, the metal brackets and wires can do so much more. Most notably, they can correct bite problems, including overbites and underbites. Not only does this improve the appearance of a patient’s smile, but it also allows them to chew properly, improving their digestion and preventing issues like teeth grinding.

Fact #4. Braces Aren’t Magnetic

Despite their popularity, there are still a few myths linked to braces. One of the most common ones is that the brackets and wires will set off metal detectors. However, braces aren’t magnetic. So, they won’t cause any problems when you are going through airport security. (They also don’t increase your risk of being struck by lightning or pick up radio transmissions).

Fact #5. Braces Can Help Children, Teens, Young Adults & More

Since children and teens are two of the largest age groups with braces, it’s not hard to see why many patients assume they are “too old” to straighten their teeth. In reality, braces can help patients that are 15, 35, or 65! In fact, adults often do better with orthodontic treatment because they understand the importance of good oral health and following their orthodontist’s instructions.

Now you know a few fun facts about braces! If you’re struggling with misaligned teeth, whether you had braces in the past or not, don’t hesitate to get in touch with your orthodontist today.

About the Practice

It was Dr. Marissa Mikolich’s own experience with braces as a teen that inspired her to become the skilled, friendly, attentive orthodontist she is today! She earned her dental doctorate from The University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine before completing her Master of Science degree at The Ohio State University College of Dentistry. Over the last decade, she’s helped numerous patients address crooked teeth, bite problems, and more.
