Are you noticing your child’s teeth are looking a bit crooked? It may seem as if every child ends up with braces, but that’s not true. Just because your child sees an orthodontist doesn’t mean he or she will leave with a mouth full of metal. If you are unsure as to when your child should see an orthodontist in Salem, we can help to explain not only the benefits but the importance of such a visit. In addition, we’ll answer the question you’re probably waiting to ask, “Do I need a referral?”

What is the Difference Between a Pediatric Dentist and an Orthodontist?

You may be asking, “If I take my child to the dentist regularly, why does she need to see an orthodontist?” It’s a valid question, but it’s one that needs explanation. A dentist takes care of your oral health. He or she will:

  • Treat for gum disease or cavities.
  • Take care of any dental restorations like crowns, fillings, dental implants
  • Perform root canals, x-rays, or teeth whitening

An orthodontist takes care of straightening your teeth. While dentists and orthodontists receive much of the same licensing and training, an orthodontist specializes in an advanced area to provide patients with straighter smiles.

When Does My Child Need to Start Seeing an Orthodontist?

By the time your child is 7 years old, it is suggested you make an appointment for her to see an orthodontist. This initial consultation will allow for a thorough exam to be completed to see if there are any indicators that point to necessary orthodontic care in the future. Should your child’s orthodontist believe it is necessary for what is called, “Early Orthodontic Intervention,” it is because there are signs that developing oral structures are not ideally aligned. Some signs include:

  • Early/late loss of baby teeth
  • Narrow palate
  • Difficulty chewing
  • Thumb sucking continues after the age of 5
  • Protruding front teeth
  • Jaw shifts when opening or closing the mouth
  • Upper and lower teeth don’t come together
  • Crowded, misplaced, or blocked tooth
  • Jaws that are too far forward or backward

Do I Need a Referral from My Dentist?

You might be surprised to know that most dental insurance plans do not require you have a referral from your dentist. While he or she may suggest one in town, you are not required, nor should you feel obligated, to choose that orthodontist. What you should research is whether your orthodontist is a preferred provider of your dental insurance. This will ensure you receive maximum benefits.

Another aspect you should think about is, while your child receives orthodontic treatment, it will be beneficial for your child’s dentist to be in contact with the orthodontist. This will ensure proper care is provided to keep your child’s teeth and gums healthy for successful orthodontic treatment.
