Braces are an effective way to achieve a straighter, healthier smile, but they can sometimes come with temporary discomfort. One common issue patients experience is oral sores caused by brackets and wires rubbing against the inside of the cheeks, lips, or tongue. The good news is that these sores are usually manageable and can often be prevented with the right care. Here are 4 ways to manage and prevent oral sores while wearing braces.
1. Use Orthodontic Wax
Orthodontic wax is one of the easiest and most effective ways to prevent irritation from braces. If a bracket or wire is rubbing against your mouth, simply place a small piece of wax over the area to create a smooth barrier.
This helps reduce friction and allows the sore spot to heal. Keep wax with you, especially after adjustments, when irritation is more likely to occur.
2. Rinse with Saltwater
Saltwater rinses are a simple and natural way to soothe oral sores and promote healing. Mix about half a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water and gently swish it around your mouth for 20 to 30 seconds.
This can help reduce inflammation, kill bacteria, and relieve discomfort. Rinsing a few times a day—especially after meals—can speed up the healing process and keep your mouth clean.
3. Stick to Soft Foods During Flare-Ups
When sores develop, certain foods can make irritation worse. Crunchy, spicy, or acidic foods may aggravate sensitive areas and slow healing.
During flare-ups, choose soft, mild foods like yogurt, mashed potatoes, smoothies, scrambled eggs, and pasta. These foods are less likely to irritate your mouth and can make eating more comfortable while your sores heal.
4. Maintain Good Oral Hygiene
Keeping your mouth clean is essential when you have braces, especially if you’re dealing with sores. Food particles and bacteria can collect around brackets and wires, increasing the risk of irritation and infection.
Brush carefully after meals using a soft-bristled toothbrush, and don’t forget to floss daily. You may also consider using an antimicrobial or alcohol-free mouthwash to help keep your mouth clean without causing additional irritation.
Oral sores can be an uncomfortable part of wearing braces, especially in the early stages or after adjustments. However, with a few simple strategies like using orthodontic wax, rinsing with salt water, choosing soft foods, and maintaining good oral hygiene, you can reduce discomfort and help prevent future irritation.
